DCUO - Orange Aura

SOE introduced several new auras into the game as a thank-you to members in DCUO. I managed to snag a slim black aura in my gift box, which I promptly sold off. I bought an Orange aura and a Slim Orange aura on the broker. Shown below is the Orange aura.

WoW - Wall of Terror

My warrior finally got the Wall of Terror today, a shield from Kel Thuzad in 25-man Naxxramas. Been running for it for ages. Farming for it got easier after the 6.0 patch, when I was able to solo 25-man Naxx on my warrior. Now nothing much to look forward to except the new WoD expansion, and farming gold daily on my farms to prepare for it.

WoW - Hellscream's Shield Wall

Finally got Hellscream's Shield Wall on my warrior from a normal Garrosh kill. Post-patch, and making use of the 100% heirloom drop rate, I had killed him once on my warrior on heroic and the 1H dropped, but no shield. Also killed him twice on my paladin while loot-specced as prot and both times the 1H dropped instead of the shield. Finally killed him on my warrior on normal mode with no 100% heirloom drop rate and got the shield. Seems like the 100% heirloom drop only applies to weapons, not shields or offhands.

Star Citizen - To own an Idris-M or not?

I sold off my entire fleet save for an Aurora LN earlier on this year, including my Idris-M and Vanduul Scythe. I made a tidy profit in the process. Now however, I'm having second thoughts and thinking about buying back an Idris-M on the grey market. I contacted a well-known trader and asked him to source for an Idris-M for me. He came back a couple of days later with a price of 3600+fees. I hesitated. It was a lot of money. The Idris-M was a capital ship and would need to be crewed. Even though I had a dream of stocking my own Idris with AI hornets and raiding a Vanduul base, it was highly improbable that I would be able to fly a capital ship myself without any human crew. I imagined myself restricted to only flying in secure UEE space with my small fleet doing nothing else but ferry cargo between planets. An inglorious way of spending time in a 3.5k ship. It would be a complete waste of resources. I am a lone ranger, and would be better off in a Constellation with a couple of AI crew or a Hornet fitted for cargo runs. My small aim in the PU is to make some money doing trade runs, buy over some factories, and work my way up the in-game social ladder as a trader/merchant/businessman. In the end, I passed on the Idris-M offer. Let me end with a quote from Sun Tzu's Art of War:
知己知彼,百戰不殆。 (Zhī jǐ zhī bǐ, bǎi zhàn bù dài.)
If you know both yourself and your enemy, you can win numerous (literally, "a hundred") battles without jeopardy.

WoW - 2k RBG rating

Woot, managed to hit 2k rating for RBGs today.

Tuesday, July 15, 2014

WoW - Finally achieved 1800 rating for RBGs!

Woot, I finally achieved 1800 rating for Rated Battlegrounds on my horde tauren warrior, and with it, access to the long-coveted level 60 replica PVP weapons and armor for transmogrification. The Horde PVP rank title at 1800 rating is Legionnaire. The Alliance equivalent is Knight-Captain. My Alliance paladin got the associated achievement but not access to the PVP title or the replica weapons and armor. It seems like you have to achieve the required RBG rating for each character in order for you to display the associated pvp title or transmog the classic replica pvp gear.

Star Citizen - Discount Hangar PBR vs non PBR

Here's a comparison of my PRB enabled hangar vs non-PBR enabled hangar. The PBR enabled hangar definitely looks a ton more natural. The vertical rays of light are not so noticeably glaring in the fishtank. PBR means Physical Based Rendering. Basically it means that different types of surfaces (such as metal, leather, plastic, glass, etc.) should look more photorealistic and more "natural" because the way that light reflects off them and the way shadows are created will be more accurate.

Star Citizen - Arena Commander (Dogfighting Module) released!

Arena Commander was released at around 2pm SG time (GMT+8) on Wed 4th July 2014. The download was 10 GB in size. I finished downloading Arena Commander yesterday evening and took my Aurora for a spin. The keyboard and mouse controls felt a bit wonky but I quickly read that people had found it easier to fly in Relative mode by pressing Ctrl-F, as well as to turn off G-Safe and COMSTAB. I did this and managed to survive to wave 5 in the Vanduul swarm mode. I'm thinking of purchasing the Thrustmaster T16000 joystick to have a go at being a fighter jock.

V0.8 of Arena Commander comes with 2 maps, Dying Star and Broken Moon. There are two modes of play - Free flight mode and Vanduul Swarm. There was a sweet bonus as well. CIG released a PDF manual of Arena Commander as a reminder of the glory days of Wing Commander: Arena-Commander-Pilots-Guide-V0-8.pdf.  Below are the screenshots of the launcher downloading the Arena Commander install.

SC2 - Jewel Rock Star

OMG, I finally managed to beat the Elite AI in StarJeweled. I saved 1000 energy and summoned 2 colossus. Then with the time they bought me, I summoned a third colossus. I summoned roaches and hydras to support. Whenever the AI summoned ultralisks, I used Warp Cell to counter them. Warp Cell is very cost effective when used against big targets like ultralisks and colossus. Don't waste your energy on psionic storm. I found it to be worthless as the energy could be better spent on summoning a colossus later on. Healing wave is pretty useful especially if you have multiple units to heal. It is always worth it to heal valuable units like the colossus. The key part is the starting phase where you build up momentum with your initial 1000 energy. The AI will catch up easily and outpace you in its energy accumulated, so you have to counter the marine spam with colossus. Once you get 3 colossus out, you've pretty much gained a solid foothold. Support them with hydralisks and save up some energy to counter enemy ultralisks and colossus with Warp Cell. Last but not least, if you get stuck with matching jewels, don't be afraid to reset the board by pressing Z. I had to reset the board 2 times in my match where I beat the Elite AI.
